Kerry as Don Giovanni
So I was sitting here in Vienna at the Volkstheatre watching the opera (how says this blog isn't classy) and a thought on the Democratic reluctance/inability to let go of Vietnam came to me as well. Certainly Kerry is no ladies man, but bear with me as I strain an analogy. The synopsis of the program in English glories in emphasizing how the Don fails to learn from his past mistakes, change his character, and (somewhat admirably) refuses to admit wrongdoing even as his castle, cursed by the supernatural spirit of one he killed, goes up in flames. Classic drama of course, but as Giovanni sinks into the debts over here in Europe, it looked eerily like Kerry drifting in the abyss. The question is whether he will be able to pull himself out, and again that is a debate question. He has done it in the past, but there is no question that the future is king. Clinton managed to turn the whole 1996 campaign into that with Dole's "building a bridge to the past". Must have that pendulum swing back. Where is Carville to go on the attack?
